Palestina

Keer op keer valt het mij op, dat er artikelen verschijnen in bv. Britse en Amerikaanse bladen, die aandacht geven aan de behandeling die de Palestijnen dag in dag uit door de bezetters wordt aangedaan. Nu lees ik weer een gruwelijk artikel in The Economist van 20 januari j.l. waar onder de titel « It’s the little things that make an occupation » en de ondertitel « Those seemingly minor inconveniences that make life hellish », waarin (naast de sprekende cijfers van de in 2006 660 gedode Palestijnen waaronde 141 kinderen, tegenover 17 Israeli burgers en 6 soldaten) aandacht wordt besteed aan de dagelijkse pesterijen, die het leven van de Palestijnen ondragelijk maken. Het aantal zogenaamde checkpoints is tussen augustus 2006 en december 2006 verhoogd van 376 tot 534 (UN Office for the Coordination of
Humanitarian Affairs) en ook de andere details in het artikel spreken boekdelen. Artikelen zoals deze geven voorbeelden waarom de haat tegen de politiek van de Israeliregeringen steeds groter wordt. En deze haat heeft niets met anti-semitisme te maken.
Het zou de reputatie van een gerenommeerd blad als Elsevier sterken, wanneer de angst om als anti-semitist te worden afgeschilderd, werd overwonnen.

Ziekenhuizen

In Elsevier van 20 januari j.l. staat bovengenoemd artikel, waarin met grote tevredenheid wordt getracht aan te tonen, dat Nederland het bij de organisatie van de gezondheidszorg vergeleken met andere landen best goed doet; nee, men kan trots zijn. Daarbij is het aantal ligdagen als enig contrôlepunt genoemd. Terwijl men uit de optiek van de patiënt daar toch zeker twee andere zeer belangrijke medische en psychologische controlepunten aan zou moeten toevoegen. Het ene is de wachttijd; twee van mijn in Nederland wonende familieleden moesten geopereerd worden aan een heup; de ene wachtte drie maanden en de andere week uit naar België. Mijn echtgenote en ikzelf hebben de ervaring in Zwitserland, dat de wachttijd te verwaarlozen is. In de tweede plaats dient de toestand van de patient te worden betracht nadat hij uit het ziekenhuis is ontslagen.

Atheism

In the Guardian Weekly of January 12-18 2007, Tobias Jones wrote an article called « Meet the new totalitarians » with the subtitle : militant secularists like Richard Dawkins are telling us believers to remain in the closet.
Jones’s conclusion is that the secular fundamentalists – as he calls them – are anti God, and that they want the eradication of religion, and all believers from the face of the earth. Jones states a.o. that until recently many believers hid their religion in the closet, conceding it was something private.
This is putting the world on its head. Has Jones forgotten about for instance the Cruisades, the burning of witches, the auto-da-fé’s, the many many wars of one religion against another ? Hasn’t he read recently about the killings world wide in name of one religion or another? Apart from wars for independence, religion is somewhere the basic reason for all the wars presently fought. Hasn’t he heard about the many laws in the USA against abortion, gay-marriage, stemcell research and what not simply because the religion was against them ? Hasn’t he heard about the restrictions by the Vatican against condoms, although that is one of the most helpful measures against the HIV infection? In the closet, Jones says…
What atheist want is being left alone and being able to do what they want to do, without interference of any pope, preacher, ayatolla or whomever. And yes, they would like to be spared any excessive expression of religion.

Read in the New York Review of Books of january 11, 07 the speech held by David Grossman at the Rubin memorial ceremony in Tel Aviv, november 4, 2006 in the oresence of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. It is a must reading for everybody. It is a scathing indictment of the present Israeli government. This is what he said about Lieberman: "We have failed to respond to the brutal kick democracy received when Avigdor Lieberman was appointed a senior cabinet member. It's the appointment of a compulsive pyromaniac to head the countrs's firefighters.
